Q: How do you say 'm@b'?

A: Its pronounced 'Matt B'. I've been called Matt B since I was 11 or so. There always seemed to be another Matt in my classes. I started using m@b as a digital signature when e-mail was in its pre-interface days. I realize that its an awkward title, but it worked for Prince...and I can dance better than him.

Q: When did m@b start?

A: In October 1998. It was a comic I was doing to entertain me and a few friends. Up until March 2000, m@b was more like a typical zine: all pages photocopied, low-print run, small readership. Since then it's evolved more along the lines of an alt/indie comic: finished or gloss covers, color, and a semi-sophisticated web site.

Q: Where can I get a copy of m@b?

A: There are three ways to obtain the comic:

1. In Canada there are stores in Toronto, Ottawa, Peterborough, Guelph, Montreal, Calgary, Vancouver and Victoria which carry each new issue for free. In the States, record shops in San Francisco and New York carry m@b. In England, the music stores of Camden (In London) and and Lincoln sporadically have issues. In Auckland, New Zealand, Moon Rocket Distribution sells copies for $2 or so. Outside of Vancouver or Toronto, there are only 30 or 40 copies per city. For the listing of stores in your city please wait a few days as I get all the info together.

2. You can order a back issue package. There are a number of different options. To see them click here.

3. If you live in Toronto, you can come to the release party I have for each issue. I usually have a band or singer play, plus a DJ. I've had Flux A.D., leviride, Sean Stephens, Justin Rutledge, Reid Jamieson, and DJs Len + Spence play their musical hearts out. Shawn Whitney, clown duo Miller and Mullet, and performance artist Sthief have also performed at said release parties. David Meslin, Sean Waisglass and Dan Eisenberg have hung their amazing photos as well.

Q: Can I get a subscription to m@b?

A: As fun and logical as it sounds, the answer is no. If readers send me advance money, I'll be locked into doing specific amount of issues. The beauty of being your own publisher is you can decide when and what you want to do. I may decide to pack things in over the next week -- or I may continue to do this for 20 more years.

Q: Do these things really happen to you?

A: I have to make the distinction between myself and the comic: the events that take place in m@b are all inspired by my experiences. But at the same time, I take some artistic liberty with the comic. When you walk around as much as I do, you're bound to see some nutty things.
